New provincial funding is set to “significantly” reduce Trent University’s projected operating deficit for the upcoming academic year and for future years, according to a recent report to the school’s board of governors. During the board’s May 9 meeting, governors were asked to approve a revised operating budget which includes updated provincial funding meant for institutions whose enrolment had increased beyond the level funded between 2020-2025 under the Strategic Mandate Agreement (SMA3).

Peterborough city council will receive an update on the progress of the physician recruitment pilot project during a general committee meeting May 12. In late October, former government relations adviser for the city, Sarah McDougall Perrin, informed council of the city’s work alongside Peterborough Family Doctors’ Think Tank about the short-, medium- and long-term plans for physician recruitment.

Amendments could be coming to the city’s existing affordable housing community improvement plan (AHCIP) following a meeting of general committee on May 12. Peterborough councillors will look at staff recommendations to the AHCIP, which would expand the project area and revise municipal incentive programs while removing outdated programs, and incorporate relevant legislative changes related to development charge exemptions under Bill 23, the More Homes Built Faster Act.

Peterborough city council will discuss a proposal to spend $489,000 over a two-year term to implement an automated speed enforcement program around schools and community safety zones during a general committee meeting on May 12. A staff report outlining the proposal also includes $165,000 for a new senior project manager position to be included in the 2026 operating budget. Staff also estimate that the overall costs of the program will be recovered through the collection of penalties.

Betsy McGregor, an advocate for women in politics and in science, a two-time Liberal candidate for MP in Peterborough-Kawartha, a mother and grandmother, author, veterinarian and mountain climber, died Tuesday of ovarian cancer. She was 77. McGregor had been living on Clear Lake, just northeast of Lakefield, where Camp Kawartha is located — she had been a board member there.
