On Saturday, 17 cyclekart racers, some even making the trip from the U.S., will be rolling into Elmhirst’s Resort in Keene, Ont., for the fourth annual Cyclekart Grand Prix. “A cyclekart is something between a soapbox racer and a go-kart,” organizer and cyclekart enthusiast Andrew Roudny said. “Usually, they are made to resemble a pre-World War II racecar. Shifting Gears is officially underway in Peterborough, Ont., and surrounding areas. The challenge, run through GreenUP, encourages participants to choose sustainable transportation methods. “Shifting gears is a monthly challenge where we invite people to get out of their cars and instead walk, cycle, take transit or even telecommute during the month of May,” GreenUP transportation co-ordinator Ashley Burnie said.

World Migratory Bird Day is on May 11 and to mark the occasion a variety of environmental events are planned at Ken Reid Conservation Area in Lindsay, Ont. “We are doing different guided walks, starting with a dawn chorus so we can watch the sun come up over the lake and we can learn about why birds call in the morning, we can learn how to do point counts and how to ID different birds,” Kawartha Conservation source protection technician Jenna Stephens said.
