Housing advocates and homeless-service professionals gathered at the state capitol Wednesday for Housing Advocacy Day, calling on lawmakers to support legislation that promotes affordable housing and ends homelessness. The event was planned by the Virginia Housing Alliance, the only statewide organization that represents affordable housing and homelessness organizations.

The House of Delegates approved a bill Wednesday that would allow courts to require speed-monitoring devices for drivers convicted of reckless driving or speeding over 100 mph. The bill, HB2096, which passed by a 81-16 vote, is aimed at preventing speeding in Virginia.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Richmond’s independent bookstores saw a groundswell of customer support. Richmonders bought books remotely for pickup, attended Zoom readings, bought swag and helped keep the stores afloat. Recently, though, that enthusiasm has waned. In response, many of the city’s bookstores are expanding their offerings and doubling down as hubs of local community.

It takes three days for Ben Hill to make a croissant. Hill has been the pastry chef at Can Can Brasserie in Carytown since 2020. Recently, the restaurant added a coffee-shop style breakfast operation. While the croissant is a classic French pastry, Hill put his own spin on it with the cruffin - a muffin made from croissant dough. "We actually take our scraps from shaping our croissants the day before, and we'll roll it out the next day and cut it into the right size, then line the molds," he said.

By Seraina Caviezel, Special to the CitizenThe Richmond Staples Mill Amtrak Station will receive $5.8 million in federal funding as part of an initiative to make passenger and freight rail more frequent and safer across Virginia. The funding will upgrade the station by improving two platforms, adding a canopy to one platform, increasing daily train service, and promoting accessibility.
