A 17-year-old charged in a Valentine's Day high-speed crash that killed an elderly couple in Pembroke Pines was bonded out of jail Saturday after a Broward County judge set bail at $350,000 during an emotional court hearing Friday. Albert Oswaldo Yanez Quintana is accused of driving recklessly on Feb. 14, when investigators say he sped through a residential area and slammed into a car making a left turn at NW 12th Street and Dykes Road.

A Hallandale Beach man was arrested early Friday in the Florida Keys after allegedly grabbing a woman, threatening her with a gun and attempting to flee from deputies, authorities said. John Fitzpatrick, 41, faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery, resisting arrest and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

A brush fire in southern Miami-Dade County that has burned at least 400 acres was 50% contained as of Saturday, according to the Florida Forest Service, which continues to battle the flames alongside Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. As of late Friday night, all lanes along U.S. 1 and Card Sound Road between Florida City and Key Largo are open. However, fire officials caution that road closures may be reinstated at any time due to shifting conditions and ongoing firefighting operations.

Two of Zoo Miami's most iconic residents, silverback lowland gorillas Shango and Barney, have been medically cleared for transfer to Brookfield Zoo Chicago later this month, marking the end of an era for the South Florida zoo. The 36-year-old, 448-pound Shango and his younger brother, 31-year-old, 415-pound Barney, underwent comprehensive medical examinations on Friday in preparation for their move.

Two South Florida representatives toured U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement  detention facility in Pompano Beach where a woman from Haiti died a week ago. On Friday, Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick and Rep. Frederica Wilson visited the Broward Transitional Center to investigate the conditions of the facility and learn more about the circumstances surrounding the death of Marie Ange Blaise. The 44-year-old died at the facility on Friday. April 25. The cause of death is under investigation.
