Your favorite team probably has some new faces. Thanks to the recent transfer rule changes, approximately 84,513 basketball players sought new homes via the portal last offseason, give or take. At the same time, NIL rules have enabled players to cash in on their names and talents more than ever. It’s a pretty good time to be a student-athlete, at least if you’re into things like freedom and money. The biggest surprise is the speed with which NCAA has even jumped on the players’ bandwagon.

Texas coach Vic Schaefer was standing a few feet away from Harmon when she went down. He was pretty sure he knew what it was, too, but like everyone else in the gym, he clung to a glimmer of hope that he was wrong. An MRI the following day confirmed what everyone feared: Harmon had torn the MCL and ACL in her right knee. She was done for the season. Schaefer called Harmon into his office and gave her the bad news. She sobbed for 45 minutes.

Last April in Glendale, Ariz., I was sat down to interview Purdue coach Matt Painter for CBS and Turner’s Final Four coverage. Painter walked into the room, said hello and added, “I read your Rex Chapman book.” He was referring to Rex’s memoir, It’s Hard For Me To Live With Me, which I co-wrote and had been published five weeks before by Simon and Schuster. I’m always gratified when someone tells me they’ve read one of my books, especially when it’s someone I respect as much as Painter.

This was exactly what the doctor ordered for Louisville fans, who were in desperate need of something to feel good about after the past two embarrassing seasons. Is Kelsey the best coach on my list? No, but he is the best coach for Louisville at this particular time. Kelsey is the ideal replacement for Kenny Payne, who took this proud program to the laughingstock of college basketball in his two seasons at the helm. Payne won a grand total of 12 games and finished with a 5-35 ACC mark.
