In an alternative (and a much better and nicer) universe, we would be on our way to one of Manchester’s two Arenas tonight to see Art Brut. You see, back in 2005 if they would have only sold a handful (apparently they were just two short) more copies of single ‘Emily Kane’, they would have got a place in the Top 40, which would have led to them fulfilling their life’s ambition by appearing on (the still then relevant) Top Of The Pops.

Seun Kuti is the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. He has spent most of his life preserving and extending his father's political and musical legacy as the leader of his father's former band Egypt 80. Kuti was born in early 1983. He showed interest in his father's music from the age of five, and at nine began opening Fela's shows, singing a select group of songs with Egypt 80 before his dad took the stage.

This is no longer the 50s, where assumptions about what is holding Africa back can become definite motivations for action, with aims at change. Many of what seemed like answers at the time were tried in different forms, but Africa has yet to develop. Meanwhile in the same period, some countries that were backward took off. At present, there is nothing stopping a number of countries in Africa from industrialization.

Countless autocrats have managed to pulverise the foundations of democracy in their countries by passing arcane laws that quietly erode civil liberties, press freedoms or the separation of powers, to name a few examples. A new report recently confirmed that millions of people in dozens of countries saw their freedoms eroded last year. There were more countries that lost freedom in 2022 than those that gained it.
