Israel recently announced a ban on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (Unrwa), the agency responsible for supporting Palestinian refugees. For Palestinians, especially those in Gaza, this decision is heartbreaking and marks a significant shift in their suffering. Israel's claim that Unrwa has links to terrorism stems from allegations that nine employees might have participated in the 7 October attack.

ON THE NIGHT OF OCT. 6, my sister, Reem Safi, drifted off to sleep after dinner and dessert on Gaza’s tranquil beach after a small family gathering.
The morning of Oct. 7 shattered that calm. Reem woke to a barrage of rockets: initial reports hinted at the assassination of a political figure, followed by conflicting updates.

ON DAY 149 of the genocide in Gaza, I managed to escape. I didn’t escape alone; I fled with my mother, sister Lamar, and brothers Yosof and Saleh. They are dearest to my heart. If I had escaped alone, I would have felt that I hadn’t survived. It is they who make me feel safe here in Egypt. We lived successes, failures, laughs, tears, weddings, funerals and all the attacks on Gaza together.

It’s already a problem for Najwa, a 48-year-old woman from Shuja’iyya. Last fall she began to experience severe tooth pain.

On February 19, I am going to turn 23. I’m anxious that the day will come and the war will still be ongoing, but then again, I’m not entirely sure I will live long enough to see it. Before the Israeli war on Gaza, I lived a peaceful life, going every day to Al-Aqsa University in pursuit of my studies. My school has now been bombed by the Israeli military even though it was full of displaced Palestinians from northern Gaza.

ISRAEL HAS DISPLACED most Gaza Strip residents to the southern city of Rafah, where the situation is dire. Access to food, water and basic necessities is extremely limited. Many Gazan families in Rafah are forced to live in tents, where they struggle with the cold and rain, especially at night. Israel’s ongoing attacks mean that everyone in Gaza has been living in fear for more than 100 miserable days.
