North Carolina is notorious for its unpredictable weather. A Sunday morning will start sunny, but by 2 p.m. there’s a torrential downpour. An afternoon deluge may wash away plans with family or a night out with friends, but it also washes animal feces, minerals, trash and more into nearby creeks. “Our storm drains go directly to our creeks here,” Andy Szabet, coordinator of the non-profit Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful, said.

Senior Brighid Biehl described her elementary school self as spastic. Her mother tried a variety of approaches to help Biehl release her energy, but nothing seemed to calm her down like a pencil and a piece of paper. “My mom always told me that the only way I would focus on something is if I was drawing,” Biehl said, laughing.

When senior Ellie Butler was in seventh grade, she got a concussion during a horse riding competition. She was forced to visit the neurologist multiple times that year — although “forced” may be a poor choice of words, considering that nine years later, it’s a big reason she is a biology major. “I really loved going to the neurologist and thought it was really interesting,” Butler said.
