A tribal youth was allegedly assaulted, stripped and tied to an electric post for “disrupting traffic” at Attappadi in Kerala’s Palakkad district. A video of the incident — which purportedly showed the youth left at the pole in the heavy downpour for over an hour — drew outrage, prompting the police to arrest two truck drivers. The incident was last Saturday evening when the youth, Siju V, 19, was walking along a road at Chittur tribal settlement under Agali police station limits in Palakkad.

Four days after Liberian-flagged cargo ship MSC ELSA 3 capsized off Kerala coast, small patches of oil slick were Wednesday traced at Alappuzha coast. Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) director Dr T M Balakrishnan Nair Wednesday confirmed that there were traces of oil along the coast. The Liberia-flagged MSC ELSA 3, a 28-year-old vessel, was sailing from Vizhinjam port in Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi when it capsized around 25 km southwest of Alappuzha.

Besides, a Dornier aircraft equipped with specialised gear has been positioned in Kochi to undertake aerial assessments of the oil spill situation.
