I've been writing this weekly column for over 20 years now, so it's probably well-established by this point that I'm somewhat of a nerd. In reality, though, there's only a few things that make me good and truly geek out. Obviously, I'm a music junkie, so if you get me onto topics like dance music or British indie rock from the 1980s, you've dug your own grave and it's not my fault if I talk your ears off about esoteric musicians you couldn't give a rat's heiny to learn about.

Here's a pro tip I learned this week: If you're feeling down on humanity and worry society is beyond redemption, you probably shouldn't spend your free time binge-watching a reality TV show called "Bodycam."As you'd expect, this Max streamer replays police body-camera footage of police-involved incidents across the country. Spoiler alert: they're not good incidents. No one's going to tune in to watch people carry on pleasant chit-chat with law enforcement.

Sometimes it's tough to think of the world as anything but an irredeemable cesspool these days. Headlines are seldom good. People are seldom kind. The relative anonymity of the internet has emboldened people to be jerks as their primary hobby. Once upon a Shane, I used to enjoy stepping out of my car in an unfamiliar location with a profound curiosity about the world around me and the interesting people I might encounter.

People are awesome. Look, I don't mean to be one of those nosy eavesdropping types. It's not my fault if I'm contentedly minding my own business when some stranger starts talking loudly within earshot. It's tough to not become distracted and hone in on their conversation a little. And sometimes it's just... well, I mean... Okay, I lied. I love to eavesdrop. I AM one of those nosy types. I think everyone who lands in the proximity of a journalism career naturally shares this trait.
