Washington softball infielder Alexis DeBoer was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year on Friday after she put up an outstanding year at the plate. DeBoer, the daughter of former UW football and current Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer leads the squad in most offensive categories, with a team-high .369 batting average, 54 RBI and 20 home runs, which is tied for second-most in the Big Ten. DeBoer has a 1.304 OPS and a team-high 55 hits.

Mia Hamant isn’t one to back down from a battle on the soccer field. With her teammates, family and the University of Washington community united beside her, Hamant is set to face her biggest battle yet. Hamant, a junior goalkeeper on the Huskies women’s soccer team, received sobering news in mid-April. After battling a persistent cough and issues with shortness of breath for several months, Hamant was diagnosed with Stage 4 SMARCB1-deficient kidney cancer.

Eddie Smith has always loved the purple and gold. Decades before he was hired for his dream job as UW baseball coach last July, the Olympia native was a passionate Huskies fan. Smith was in early elementary school when the Don James-led football team went to the Rose Bowl and won the national title. There’s a photo of him in UW gear when he was around 3 years old. There is even a video showcasing his passionate interest in the Dawgs in the immediate aftermath of his daughter’s birth on Nov. 4, 2022.
