The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae ribosome contains four structural rRNAs and 78 proteins in its core makeup (1–3). These 78 proteins are translated from 59 duplicated gene pairs and 19 unique genes (4) that together total 137 ribosomal protein genes (RPGs). One hundred one of these genes require the removal of an intron by splicing to produce a mature messenger RNA (mRNA) (5).
