I lose the language to speak to my bodyso I pick up math for its new notation. I wear out fingernails & nights on graphpaper & learn matrices, determinants, sets. The best part is that I’m no good at math,never have been. I tire professors & scrap paper,exhausting notebooks with errors & paperingmargins with graphite. Tattooing the clean bodyof a proof with eraser scrubs & messy math. To improve my reasoning, I bring notationinto my routines.

Literary magazines and contests got married a long time ago. I’m not sure what the courting process was like back then, but I can imagine a meet-cute might have gone something like this:Lit mag: I need money. Contest: I give money to other people. Lit mag: You are irrelevant to me. Contest: But people will give you money in the hopes of me giving them money. Lit mag: You are very relevant to me. Let’s get married and make infinite babies. Okay, I’m not a romcom writer and now you know why.

Welcome to our weekly column offering perspectives on lit mag publishing, with contributions from readers, writers and editors around the world. Okay, first, jokes. “Non-profit,” in the non-legal sense, literally means something that doesn’t net profit. So, by that definition, ONLY POEMS is most definitely a “non-profit,” or perhaps even “anti-profit,” because, well, I crunched the numbers today and our profit is negative $3,264.22.

For your pleasure and consideration, I have brought you a review that is also a drinking game. We will be taking a drink every time we spot a reference to a play or musical; we will be taking two drinks if we spot a reference specifically to The Phantom of the Opera (1986); and we will be finishing our glass if we are sufficiently off-book on Into the Woods (1987) that we can finish a lyric quoted in the book at a crucial moment. That last bit will be the final exam of this book review.
