No injuries were reported when a single engine crop duster went down in a field southeast of Louise Friday morning. The plane, a Grumman G-164A registered to Nelson Flyers Inc. of Louise, experienced engine issues and set down in a field near Danevang just after 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 18, according to the FFA preliminary report. The name of the pilot was not released.

Efforts to beautify El Campo have earned state recognition and city council is giving the credit to one organization and its chief. The state has named Keep El Campo Beautiful at Gold Star Affiliate of the Keep Texas Beautiful organization for its work last year. Keep Texas Beautiful has a three-grade rating system for its affiliates with gold being the highest level. Beyond recognition, the top rating improves the city’s chances of receiving grant dollars in these areas.

The reason Wharton’s police chief was suspended in January was a case of “mutual bullying” that turned into a human resources complaint, according to documentation released following a Wharton County Leader-Journal Open Records request and Texas Attorney General’s review. Both Police Chief Terry Lynch and his accuser were required to take ethics training and read an article on workplace bullying following the internal Wharton city investigation conducted by Assistant City Manager Paula Favors.

A 33-year-old Wharton man riding his motorcycle without wearing a helmet was killed Sunday when he lost control in Hungerford. Willie Fisher, astride a 2013 Honda, had been northbound on Hwy. 60 just before 7 p.m. when he approached the sharp curve after passing Mulberry to Live Oak. “According to our investigation and witnesses, he left the road to the right of the curve and struck a concrete barrier,” Department of Public Safety Sgt. Stephen Woodard told the newspaper.

An El Campo ordinance restricting where for-sale vehicles can be placed is under review two weeks after it was approved. The ordinance stops businesses that are not car lots and/or do not have a Special Use Permit allowing for vehicle sales from displaying for-sale vehicles on their property. It does not, however, restrict charity fundraisers from displaying drawing prizes like a car or boat in an effort to generate ticket sales.
