This is the first blog in a series that will consider positive uses of technology. We start by introducing the idea of a physical/tangible interface that modifies a Generative AI prompt to make a student aware of the way different personas might view a question. The question “Is technology a force of good?” might be asked from a skeptical, thoughtful, confident or curious position; Generative AI’s answers to these very different positions will also be very different from each other.

Dear KV,Even though I am not in academia, I try to keep up with the research in computing science, mostly by reading the abstracts of papers in the SIGs I was a member of in college. From time to time, I find an interesting paper that contains something I can apply in my day job. Sometimes I am even lucky enough to find that the researchers have posted their code to their web page or a service like GitHub. But, more often than not, whenever I try the code, I find it has many problems.

Nvidia’s rise to a $2-trillion valuation at the beginning of 2024 underscored the extraordinary computing demands of artificial intelligence systems that power ChatGPT and a host of other cloud services that create videos, music, and computer programs on demand. The power of computing and memory scaling has provided much of the impetus behind the surge in interest in generative AI based on large language models (LLMs).

Designing microchips is among the most complex tasks in the digital world. It requires vast amounts of theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as a heaping dose of creativity. There are components to select, layouts to consider, and complex software models to understand. It is safe to say that squeezing millions or billions of circuits onto a tiny silicon wafer to eke out maximum performance with minimal energy consumption pushes up against the limits of human ingenuity.

Embodied Artificial Intelligence (EAI) integrates AI into physical entities like robots, enabling autonomous perception, learning, and interaction with environments. Unlike earlier robotics, which focused on specific tasks, EAI fosters versatile robots capable of adapting to various situations. This discussion explores EAI’s potential societal impacts, considering its ability to reshape social structures and daily life [1].
