From funky park to gardens. On a warm breezy spring day, 38 Memorial Drive Garden Clubbers boarded a Harris County bus for a field trip arranged by Sue Shefman. Laughter and trivia not related to gardening was shared during the drive-by of the Orange Show and onto the neighboring whimsical Smither Park. Pete Gershon, curator of the Orange Show, enchanted them with the fascinating history. What’s a field trip without food?

Bahama mama. Nassau, Bahamas was serving up sunshine and sea breezes for Amanda Finnett’s birthday getaway with hubby Paul Finnett – meanwhile, back in Houston, a three-hour flight away, winter was throwing a tantrum. Mermaid Amanda made the most of the sparkling blue waters at the sleek new Goldwynn Resort before indulging in a celebratory feast at the historic Graycliff Restaurant, a 18th-century gem tucked inside the Graycliff Hotel.

Drinks on the driveway. Chis and Reese Baker have a patio incorporated into their driveway with a place for large tables and many chairs. And their newly poured driveway has a large flagstone-like pattern meant to host parties. They invited neighbors to bring food and drinks and share a chitchat in the holiday spirit.

The Memorial graduate met the Massachusetts prep school fellow… when they were both living in Maryland in 2019. Luc Renault proposed to Brenna Black while they were on a hike with their dogs in Park City, Utah. More fun ensued just before the wedding on Oct. 13, with a tailgate-themed welcome party. Everyone wore their college team colors as they mingled, with the college football games playing on three screens.

Nearly neighbors. Michael Anzilotti and Carla Martinez lived near each other but met on Hinge in Dec. 2021. They discovered they share a passion for travel, food, and that they both work out at The Houstonian. Michael proposed to Carla at the Rose Garden at the McGovern Centennial Gardens. The Sante Fe, New Mexico wedding ceremony was at Our Lady of Guadalupe and the reception took place at the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado, surrounded in desert shades with a hint of citrus colors.

Boot Scootin’ fun. Partiers dressed in bling boots and western hats enjoyed a VIP saloon, lively casino, and dancing at the Yellow Rose Ball – held at the Royal Sonesta to raise funds for the Spring Branch Education Foundation. Board president Jim Elliott welcomed everyone, and co-chairs Kim Huston, Rebekah James, and Kristin Thomas thanked Spring Branch ISD supporters for raising more than $316,000 for campus and district programs.

Secret beach. They discovered the Secret Beach in Belize was not so secret. It was on the west side of the Ambergris Caye with the clearest water and lots of bars and restaurants to serve you at your lounge chair. Charles and Rebecca Turner along with their kids Ben (a 10th grader at The Kinkaid School) and Julia (a freshman at the University of Tennessee) kept busy there during spring break.

Unwelcome guest. Lauren, Chris, Avery, Nicholas, and Elle Rutherford celebrated mom Lauren’s birthday, which fell over a holiday break. A new destination for them was specifically to the One&Only Mandarina resort in Mexico for four days. They ziplined for the first time through the tropical jungle and had many hikes and sightings of a raccoon species called coatis. A fave spot was the infinity pool overlooking the stunning private beach.

Outdoorsy type. When Kaitlyn White decided she wanted to attend Kanakuk summer camp in Missouri, her mom, Amy Smith White, was thrilled because she was a former camper and leader there. Before Kaitlyn’s second summer to attend Kanakuk in 2017, she landed in the ER in Dallas on the way. She was given the choice to arrive at camp late or get a refund. Because she decided to attend, she met Benjy Homoelle, from Columbus, Ohio, on the K-2 docks. By early 2019, they were dating long distance.
