Redundancy notices have been sent to 400 staff at the Grangemouth refinery as owner Petroineos prepares to convert it to an import terminal. Only 65 of the roughly 500 jobs on the site will be required. Sharon Graham, general secretary of trade union Unite, described the closure is a “national disgrace” and a “needless act of industrial vandalism”.

Everyone knows the story of British manufacturing; from the workshop of the world to historic decline. We’ve now even slipped out of the global top 10 of industrial nations. Literally millions of jobs across the sector have been lost and as a result we make less and import far more. This has been a disaster for Britain. From washing machines to trucks, we are now reliant on dictatorships to supply our basic needs. At a time of rising global conflict, this is a problem that needs addressing now.

Unite may be Labour’s biggest affiliate, but our job first and foremost is to defend workers. I make no apology for holding Labour’s feet to the fire on workers’ rights – no matter how uncomfortable it might make some or what criticism is laid at my door. Of course I want a Labour government, but that doesn’t mean I will sit on the sidelines and applaud while it caves in to the business lobby and rows back on its commitments.

Last summer, The Press and Journal ran a comment piece from Unite, written by me, about the so-called “just transition” to net zero. The headline was right on the money. It declared: “We can’t sit back and allow oil and gas workers to become the miners of net zero“. I can’t tell you how that has chimed with Unite members and those employed in the North Sea energy industry. Workers cannot be sacrificed on the altar of net zero. After all, we’ve had the warnings of history.

Tata threatens to quit, a panicked Government writes a cheque, and we’re asked to swallow more job losses. Under the current proposal, the Conservative government is offering £500million to boost the value of Tata’s assets, without giving anything much in return.

This year will be another defined by the political choices we make. With the severity of our predicament becoming ever clearer, the only difference will be the importance of the decisions being taken. If Britain were a hospital patient most doctors would mark us down as being in a “bad way”, our recovery touch and go. But the anaemic position we find ourselves in is not down to some unassailable global force rammed up against us. It is down to our actions. Things we have done.
