In 2023, linear TV viewing time fell for another successive year in the UK, decreasing by 6 minutes, reaching an average time of 2 hours and 4 minutes per person per year.

Omdia’s Sharon Kong digs into the launch of Paramount+ in Japan this month and explores the competition that the streamer will face in this crowded market. Following its expansion into South Korea last year, Paramount has launched its Paramount+ streaming service in Japan through the on-demand services of cable TV operator and broadband internet provider J:COM and premium pay channel Wowow Inc. There is no additional cost for their respective subscribers.

Japan’s streaming landscape is evolving rapidly and the merger between U-Next and Paravi looks set to create a new giant in the industry, writes Omdia analysts Sharon Kong & Rob Moyser. Online video subscription revenue in Japan is expected to hit north of $4bn by 2027, with global streamers vying with domestic operators for their share of that pot. And in a bid to compete with Disney+, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, two domestic operators have merged operations.
