Managers began doling out disciplinary notices to employees at River Valley Co-op this week, following an announcement of enforcement of an existing ban on almost all non-co-op issued buttons and pins, employees said. The ramped-up enforcement comes on the heels of the co-op's 16,500-odd member households casting ballots on an advisory poll on a member-led proposal to deshelve products made in Israel over the country's violations of international law.

At the Town Council meeting on Oct. 15, I came to the microphone for public comment. Everything was moving along smoothly until my comments turned to Council candidate Clayton Corey. Mayor Dickey interrupted me, asked me to stop and explained why. So, with all due respect to the Council and the mayor, I stopped. There was a discussion raised by Hannah Toth and her final word was “let him speak.” But I felt it best to honor the mayor’s admonishment and simply sum up my comment.

I wasn’t aware residents were involved in an election at the last council meeting, but we were!It was discussed how the council will move forward now that they are short one person. It is disheartening to see neighbors and friends divided by partisan politics, unable to find common ground or engage in constructive dialogue. Unfortunately, I often see letters from those supporting our current mayor with insults and accusations leveled at her opponents and other current Town Council members.

In recent years, one of the biggest political battlegrounds in Easthampton have been its parks projects. A skate park, pickleball courts, a dog park, and places to play basketball have filled discussion in public meetings. But as those parks projects advance through planning phases, some Parks and Recreation Committee members and maintenance staff workers are skeptical that the city has done all the necessary groundwork to support this expansion of maintenance demands.
