    More than 50 families recently participated in Duke Energy Science Night James Love Elementary School in Shelby. Participants built roller coasters, created a gardens in gloves, constructed and flew ring gliders. Nine-year-old Ava Gilmer works at the Garden in a Glove station during the Duke Energy Science Night at James Love Elementary School Tuesday evening, April 29, 2025. James Love Elementary is one of 180 North Carolina elementary schools that hosted Duke Energy Science Nights in April.

    A fire gutted a Kings Mountain apartment building and left one woman dead and several families displaced early Wednesday morning. According to a news release from the city of Kings Mountain, shorty after 4 a.m., the Kings Mountain Police Department received multiple emergency calls reporting a structural fire at the Green Tree Apartments, located at 612 Charles St."Upon arrival, the Kings Mountain Fire Department found one of the apartment buildings fully engulfed in flames," the release said.

San Miguel Mexican Store and Restaurant was built out of love of community, authentic Mexican food and fulfilling the American dream. It's been almost a year since Janette Alvarez and her family opened a Mexican restaurant and store on Lafayette Street at the former Bicycles and Re-Cycle site, and they've been serving up homestyle meals ever since. "We looked around at different places ... we saw it, and we fell in love," she said.
