    The town of Boiling Springs recently welcomed a new restaurant to town. 131 East Small Bites & Eatery, located next door to the Vintage Dog at 131 E. College Ave. in Boiling Springs, is a small family-run business that opened its doors late last summer. Brandie Blanton said she's always loved to cook, a passion passed down from her mother, Hope Martin, who works with her in the kitchen. Blanton said she has six kids and enjoyed making home-cooked meals when they were growing up.

    For more than six decades, Palm Tree Church in Lawndale has held an annual barbeque to help fund church projects. This year, the meal has been named the Keith Shuford Memorial BBQ in honor of a dedicated volunteer and cook who died last year. Funds raised will be placed in a church memorial fund and will be used for special projects. The barbeque will be held Saturday, April 12, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Palm Tree Church, at 1160 W. Stagecoach Trail, Lawndale. Plates will be $15.

    The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction recently released its school performance grades, which revealed some improvements over last year's results.The performance score is based 80% on the school’s achievement score and 20% upon the school’s growth score. Schools are designated as low-performing if they receive an N.C. Report Card grade of D or F and do not exceed growth.
