Schools would not be required to offer the course, and parents could opt their children out of the course if desired.

\LANSING — Michigan lawmakers are making another push for a statewide Silver Alert system that would notify residents about missing adults in their area. The alerts could be used for adults over 60, or younger people with a diagnosed cognitive impairment. According to MDHHS, nearly 200,000 Michigan residents 65 and older have Alzheimer’s disease.

LANSING — The state of Michigan released its latest Eat Safe Fish guide this week, more than doubling the amount of previous warnings about consuming potentially contaminated fish. The state suggests anglers use the guide to reduce their consumption of PFAS and other harmful chemicals. The warnings apply to hundreds of bodies of water around the state, including some in Northern Michigan.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress said in January that just under a quarter of Michigan’s fourth graders are considered proficient at their reading level.

LANSING — A Michigan House committee heard testimony Tuesday on the closure of the Shawono Center, a treatment facility for juvenile offenders in Grayling. The 40-bed center closed in January, with the state saying it could better care for the youths at a facility in Macomb County — but Northern Michigan officials say the closure has hurt their communities.
