A Norfolk woman who became a nurse because she liked caring for people was recognized on Thursday for her service during World War II. Kathleen Briard, who is 102 years old, received a recognition medal from Gov. Jim Pillen that honors her work as a field nurse at Hickam Field in Hawaii from 1944 to 1946. She is among the around 250 surviving WWII veterans in the state who are being recognized through the program implemented by the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs.

What is now Memorial Day began as Decoration Day in 1868, three years after the end of the Civil War. Then it was formalized by an order issued by John A. Logan, commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. After World War I, the purpose was expanded to include honoring all people who had died in all American wars. In 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act and designated the last Monday in May as Memorial Day.
