When artists Demi Raven, ’02, and Janet Galore, ’89, went looking for a live-work space, the couple wanted something unconventional, a place where they could be inspired by different ideas and hold big gatherings. A place where they could paint large canvases, edit film, modify toasters and design cool things, a place they could fill with art and books, a place where they could host art exhibitions, workshops and salons.

When her husband, George Liu, was diagnosed with cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic, Assunta Ng, ’74, ’76, ’79, knew something had to give. Adding her partner’s operational duties for the publications to her own responsibilities as newspaper publisher, she found it impossible to balance her time with being his caregiver.

Born in New Jersey in 1965, Katell studied music at Bard College. He moved across the country to Seattle in 1989 and fell into the city’s lively music scene. Katell played guitar and sang in bands including RadialArmSaw while also volunteering as a DJ for KCMU, the student-run radio station at the University of Washington. In the early 1990s, Katell co-organized a station walkout with Censorship Undermines Radio Stations Ethics to protest programming changes and staff dismissals.

As a professor at University of California San Diego, Covey is a role model for young physicians. His “extraordinary personal standards of competency and dedication to service and integrity, transcend his international reputation as one of the world’s leading authorities on combat surgery,” according to his nomination for the UW award. Born in Woodland, California, Covey attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, where he studied oceanography.
