New York City–based wedding makeup artist Sarah Ahn has noticed a new trend with her brides: “Korean-American brides have been looking to embrace their culture on their wedding day,” she says. That’s where the paebaek ceremony comes in. Dating back to the 1300s and the beginning of the Joseon dynasty, the paebaek is a moment during the wedding to focus entirely on family. During the 30-minute ceremony, the bride and groom pay deference to their elders through bowing and serving them tea.
