This study included 171 patients with IPF (69 German and 102 Japanese patients). The median follow-up time was 29.9 months (12.0–44.8 months). The main characteristics of the patients are shown in Table 1. The median age was 68 years, and 139 of 171 patients (81.2%) were men. The Japanese cohort comprised more male patients with IPF than the German cohort.

This population-based retrospective cohort study targeting all citizens of Japan was conducted using data from the CRoss Icu Searchable Information System (CRISIS), the largest national database of severe COVID-19 patients in Japan (UMIN000041450) [15], combined with data officially published by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) [16, 17].
