Introduction Interspecific competitive interactions can play an important structuring role in communities via their effects on organismal growth and survival. An often-overlooked factor regarding how such interactions may shape life-history traits is through the microbiota associated with the competing host species (Augustin et al. 2017). Microbiota can contribute to host fitness by affecting host digestion, metabolism, growth and immunity (Franzenburg et al. 2013, Motiei et al. 2020).

AbstractSpecies co occurrence can lead to competitive interactions that influence fitness. Competition is typically assumed to be modulated by species niche, especially food acquisition related traits. The influence of interspecific interactions on host microbiome communities has rarely been considered, and yet may provide an alternative mechanism regarding the effect of host species co occurrence on their fitness.
