Plastic recycling has remained low despite recent calls for reductions in waste generation and the need to implement more sustainable processes [1], [2]. In particular, for polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the most widely used condensation polymer, recycling rates stood at around 21 % in 2020, mainly due to drawbacks associated with the heterogeneity of the feedstock as well as the considerable amounts of impurities present in the sample [3], [4].

The excessive release of CO2 has resulted in increasingly severe environmental challenges, encompassing global warming, rising sea levels, ocean acidification, and a heightened frequency of extreme weather events.
