Vanderbilt for Veterans hosted a group of Nashville veterans for a student discussion on Nov. 15. The event aimed to extend traditional Veterans Day celebrations by fostering interaction among veterans, faculty and students. For the first half of the event, four veterans introduced themselves and spoke to the group about their experiences in the military. The event then shifted into a conversational session where attendees could ask veterans questions about their service.

Dialogue Vanderbilt hosted Deborah Archer, civil rights lawyer and president of the American Civil Liberties Union, for a discussion of First Amendment rights on Oct. 22 to an audience of over 100 students and faculty. Archer was chosen as the speaker for Vanderbilt Law School’s annual Victor S. Johnson Lecture as a part of this year’s Free Speech Week. Archer is a clinical law professor at New York University School of Law.

Vandy Karma inaugurated Vanderbilt’s first designated Hindu prayer space on campus in the new Student Engagement Space on Feb. 22. Used by various student organizations, the SES holds both religious and secular spaces, and the new Hindu prayer space will be open to all students. The inaugural event included Hindu religious rituals and a dinner.

Nearly three years after its establishment, the new Vanderbilt Rogers Center for the American Presidency officially launched its first speaker series this February. TEDxNashville Women returned after a three-year hiatus on Nov. 2 and was hosted by the Blair School of Music in Ingram Hall with the theme “In Good Company.” One of TEDxNashville’s two annual events, TEDxNashville Women brought together various speakers and audience members from Middle Tennessee to discuss women’s empowerment and diversity. Speakers came from industries spanning music, finance, media, business, medicine and athletics.

Vanderbilt Army ROTC sent cadets to compete in the annual Army Ten-Miler race on Oct. 8 in Washington, D.C., for the first time in battalion history. The team competed against 63 other groups in the ROTC and military academy division, placing ninth. Army ROTC students from Vanderbilt, Belmont University, Tennessee State University, Trevecca Nazarene University, Fisk University, Welch College and Lipscomb University comprise Vanderbilt’s Gold Go Battalion.

Next fall, the university will relaunch the American studies major as a new major titled culture, advocacy and leadership. At the start of this school year, a political economies minor was added, as well as a Korean concentration in the Asian studies major and a research methods subfield to the political science major. The political science and communication of science and technology major requirements were also changed to be less restrictive to students.
