A shooting occurred at Antioch High School — located just under 20 miles southeast of Vanderbilt’s campus — on Jan. 22 in which a 17-year-old gunman opened fire in the school’s cafeteria, killing himself and a 16-year-old girl while wounding another student. Members of both the Nashville and Vanderbilt communities expressed their grief for the students, teachers and families affected by the tragedy.

Vanderbilt Political Review hosted a debate on Oct. 15 between Vanderbilt College Democrats and Vanderbilt College Republicans. Both groups advocated for their respective 2024 presidential candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. The event was held in conjunction with the Civil Discourse Lab, part of the Dialogue Vanderbilt program. In February, VPR hosted a similar debate between VCD and VCR on gun policy, almost one year after the Covenant school shooting.

The university started the transition this July to using the “QuickTicket by WeGo” app to allow access to WeGo Public Transit, which provides public transportation across Nashville and surrounding Davidson County, including local and regional buses. Physical QuickTicket cards will also be available. Vanderbilt’s partnership with WeGo began in 2020, providing students access to WeGo public transit through the use of a physical Commodore Card.
