Vanderbilt community reacts to Antioch High School shooting

A shooting occurred at Antioch High School — located just under 20 miles southeast of Vanderbilt’s campus — on Jan. 22 in which a 17-year-old gunman opened fire in the school’s cafeteria, killing himself and a 16-year-old girl while wounding another student. Members of both the Nashville and Vanderbilt communities expressed their grief for the students, teachers and families affected by the tragedy.

In her Oct. 17 lecture, Pelosi shared her experience as Speaker of the House, reflections on the Trump presidency and thoughts on the upcoming election. 15 minutes ago The U.S. Elections class hosted congresswoman and former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi on Oct. 17. Pelosi answered questions from professors of political science John Geer and Jon Meacham before engaging in a Q&A session with students.
Vanderbilt Political Review hosts debate on presidential candidates between Vanderbilt College Democrats, Republicans

Vanderbilt Political Review hosted a debate on Oct. 15 between Vanderbilt College Democrats and Vanderbilt College Republicans. Both groups advocated for their respective 2024 presidential candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. The event was held in conjunction with the Civil Discourse Lab, part of the Dialogue Vanderbilt program. In February, VPR hosted a similar debate between VCD and VCR on gun policy, almost one year after the Covenant school shooting.
Public transportation access for students transitions to virtual platform

The university started the transition this July to using the “QuickTicket by WeGo” app to allow access to WeGo Public Transit, which provides public transportation across Nashville and surrounding Davidson County, including local and regional buses. Physical QuickTicket cards will also be available. Vanderbilt’s partnership with WeGo began in 2020, providing students access to WeGo public transit through the use of a physical Commodore Card.

Vanderbilt’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine hosted Palestine Awareness Week from March 18-24, with various events to promote Palestinian history and culture with a speaker event on March 29. A pop-up exhibit was also staged at the Vanderbilt Divinity School on March 25 in partnership with 615 Youth for Palestine.

Three pairs of students are running for VSG student body president and vice president for the 2024-25 school year. This year’s campaigns include the second all-female platform and the first transgender platform in VSG history. The election was indefinitely suspended after a March 23 order issued by the VSG Judicial Court due to controversy surrounding one ticket’s illegitimacy, but a March 24 order ruled that voting will occur on March 26 and 27 after a one-day campaign period on March 25.
First designated Hindu prayer space on campus established in the Student Engagement Space

Vandy Karma inaugurated Vanderbilt’s first designated Hindu prayer space on campus in the new Student Engagement Space on Feb. 22. Used by various student organizations, the SES holds both religious and secular spaces, and the new Hindu prayer space will be open to all students. The inaugural event included Hindu religious rituals and a dinner.

Vanderbilt Political Review hosted a Feb. 28 debate on gun control between members of Vanderbilt College Republicans and Vanderbilt College Democrats. The event was the first to feature conversations between VCR and VCD since they last met in October 2021.
