When Shaiza Liaqat arrived at Texas Wesleyan University four years ago, she was stepping into a world far from home. Moving from Pakistan to the United States meant adjusting to a new culture, new people, and new challenges. Instead of shying away, she embraced every opportunity that came her way, growing into a leader who now plays a vital role on campus. “I got here not just at Texas Wesleyan, but in the United States four years ago,” Liaqat said.

Dr. Carlos Martinez has been a key figure at Texas Wesleyan University for 33 years, serving as the dean of the School of Education. His journey hasn’t been a straight path, but it’s one that has made him a respected leader known for his dedication to both students and faculty. Martinez’s story started in Puerto Rico, where he graduated from the University of Puerto Rico in 1986.

Texas Wesleyan celebrated Martin University Center’s (MUC) fourth birthday on Sept. 20 at 12:30 p.m. in the Kay Granger Mall. Students were given free cupcakes and party hats to celebrate the day. “We had a lot of students come through and all the cake and cupcakes got eaten,” said Barbara Walker, director of student activities, diversity, inclusion, programming and orientation. “It’s an event that I put on, so I felt really good about it.” Students were not the only ones in attendance.
