The Kenyan writer Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, who was censored, imprisoned and forced into exile by the dictator Daniel arap Moi, a perennial contender for the Nobel prize for literature and one of few writers working in an indigenous African language, has died aged 87. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dad, Ngugi wa Thiong’o, this Wednesday morning,” wrote his daughter Wanjiku wa Ngũgĩ on Facebook.

A stunt performer is suing Kevin Costner and the producers of his film Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, alleging that she was made to perform in a “violent” unscripted rape scene without the required notice, consent or a mandatory intimacy coordinator present. Devyn LaBella was the lead stunt double for Ella Hunt, who plays Juliette in the Horizon films, a four-part western anthology written, directed by and starring Costner.

Marcel Ophuls, the Oscar-winning French film-maker whose documentary The Sorrow and the Pity uncovered the truth of the Vichy government’s collaboration with Nazi Germany during the second world war, has died aged 97. Ophuls “died peacefully” on Saturday, his grandson Andreas-Benjamin Seyfert confirmed on Monday. Ophuls was born in Frankfurt in 1927, to the German actor Hilde Wall and the renowned German Jewish director Max Ophuls.
