Kimberly Barker says Medicaid is a lifeline for West Virginia, and it’s also vital coverage that has kept her healthy. In July 2009, Barker left an abusive relationship. “I was attacked and strangled by a boyfriend,” she recalled. “I don’t think I was supposed to leave that house alive. I had been hit in the back of the head, side, front and slammed into the floor. Luckily, I escaped.”She was admitted to the emergency room with a concussion and received further testing due to head trauma.
