In the final morning keynote and panel discussion at the 2025 CIM CONNECT Convention and Expo on May 7, Ammar Al-Joundi, president and CEO of Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd., presented on financial strategies for a dynamic industry. He opened the keynote by stating that financing is a core necessity in the mining industry, but one that does not receive enough attention and consideration. “We focus so much, and rightfully so, on operational, technical, social aspects of our business,” he said.

Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s minister of energy and natural resources, announced on Feb. 6 at a press conference at McGill University in Montreal that the federal government would invest up to $43.5 million in conditionally approved funding for critical minerals infrastructure and research in Quebec. He also announced the establishment of a collaboration table between the federal government and the province that would support the development of critical minerals projects.

In April 2019, Michel Larivière, a clinical psychologist and a full professor at Laurentian University in Sudbury, presented the findings of a three-year study funded by Vale Canada called Mining Mental Health during the Mining Health and Safety Conference in Sudbury. The study surveyed 2,224 people working at Vale’s Ontario operations (Sudbury and Port Colborne)—which represented 56 per cent of Vale Canada’s workforce at that time—about their mental well-being.
