The idea of adversity making a team stronger might be an old story, but the Bound Brook High School softball team proved this season that just because something’s cliché, doesn’t mean it isn’t true. The Crusaders were at something of a disadvantage even before the season started, as the Group 1 program moved up to the Skyland Conference Valley Division for the first time after playing in the Mountain each season since the league went to four divisions a decade ago.

In fact, it could be said, winning a state title was just a means to an end.

1. Hunterdon Central (25-3) – preseason No. 2 – With eight seniors in the starting lineup, the Red Devils won the program’s first state Group 4 championship since 2011 and then headed to prom. Along the way, they won their first sectional title since 2015, finally breaking through in their fifth straight trip to the final.

RARITAN TOWNSHIP – The Skyland Conference Senior Softball All-Star Game was played Tuesday at Diamond Nation, and, as usual, the numbers on the scoreboard and the stat book meant little for the league’s 12th graders, representing their high schools on the diamond one final time. It was about reconnecting with past teammates, forging new relationships, and relishing what will be the last time they’ll share a field with teammates, friends and, for some, even, family.

UNION TOWNSHIP (Union) – Chelsea Kiesewetter was faced with a tough choice. She could accept an invitation to play in the Super 36 All-Star Softball Game at Seton Hall, which honors the top high school softball seniors in the state, or the Governor Livingston shortstop could play in the third-annual Union County All-Star Game on Monday at Kean University, which was slated for the same evening.
