Hundreds of people packed Redwood City’s Courthouse Square on Monday for “A Day Without Immigrants,” a nationwide protest highlighting the essential role of immigrant workers. Business owners, workers, students, and families took to the streets, waving flags and carrying signs demanding immigrant rights. Chef Manuel Martinez, who owns La Viga and LV Mar in Redwood City and San Agus in Palo Alto, closed his restaurants for the day in solidarity.

After more than five years of planning, the Center for Creativity is gearing up to open its doors at the historic Hotel Sequoia in downtown Redwood City, aiming to bridge the gap in access to the arts. “The arts help heal communities and it also creates a space for people who are socially isolated,” said Jill Asher, a CFC steering committee member. CFC has announced its plan for a two-year temporary arts center set to open in early spring.

The Redwood City Council on Monday unanimously approved a decision to appoint retired Fire Chief Ray Iverson as the interim fire chief while the city continues to search for a new fire department head. Iverson retired as Redwood City’s fire chief on December 20, 2024. The city began its recruitment process for a permanent fire chief in August. He previously led the department since June 2021.

Law enforcement cleared the Douglas Avenue area following an active investigation in North Fair Oaks. San Mateo County sent an alert at around 10:56 am on Monday, Jan. 13, advising the public of an active investigation on Douglas Avenue. “Avoid the area and expect increased law enforcement presence,” the alert read. The county declined to provide any details about the situation.

In light of such scams, San Mateo County has issued a safety reminder with essential tips to help residents avoid falling victim to these fraudulent schemes. In her Facebook post, Morello shared how she received a call from a Redwood City Police Department number by someone claiming to be a detective.
