The Melodic Minor scale was used by Paul McCartney the basis for Yesterday and in jazz standard Autumn Leaves to create a sense of airiness. It works a treat when soloing over minor chords, too... It is another great scale choice to use over Minor progressions. It’s not too dissimilar to the Harmonic Minor as it also features a Major 7th interval. However, the challenge with this scale when initially trying to incorporate it into your playing, is getting used to its sound.

There are a number of different minor scales available, suiting different situations and chord progressions. Two of the most common used by guitarists are the minor pentatonic (1-b3-4-5-b7) and natural minor scale (1-2-b3-4-5-b6-b7), also known as Aeolian mode. There are other scales, such as the Dorian mode (1-2-b3-4-5-6-b7), but the minor pentatonic and natural minor are the ones we usually learn first.

String skipping is a technique often required when phrases feature wide intervals that would prove too stretched if attempting to use only adjacent strings. Traditionally, melodic phrases have favoured small interval based lines using adjacent strings, moving fret by fret, string by string. This yields wonderfully musical results. However, string skipping allows us to create phrases with wider intervals that often sound more arresting.
