It starts with a sound. The shrill, high-pitched shriek has dogs’ ears pricking up as a small black dot appears on the horizon, shimmering in the heat haze like a tiny mote of dust dancing in sunlight. Within a few seconds the noise – it’s the sound of air being torn apart inside a spinning compressor and spat from an exhaust – deepens into roaring whistle as the dark speck resolves into the shape of a bike, pointed nose, rider prone on the tank.

Massively experienced road testerOverall BikeSocial rating4/5The Triumph Bonneville is one of those bikes that needs little introduction. Originally released in 1958 and named in honour of Johnny Allen’s 214mph land speed record that was set in 1956 on a Triumph at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, it was only ever going to be a matter of time before the reinvented British brand reintroduced the Bonneville name for a new generation of riders to enjoy.

Bike journo for a quarter of a centuryOverall BikeSocial rating4/5The G650GS took over from the old F650 as BMW’s entry level ‘adventure’ single in 2011. The outgoing BMW F 650 GS was a hard act to follow, having garnered loyal fans the world over on account of its easy-going nature, reliable Rotax motor, strong all-round ability and – for a bike wearing the famous BMW badge – affordability.
