DEBATES AROUND CONTEMPORARY ART have been heated by recent events—specifically, in Kassel, to name just one example.1 What is art today? What is admitted and what is forbidden? Is a new morality challenging the freedom once associated with art? And how does (or should) art reflect the social and political phenomena that we must contend with?
