IntroductionInsulin serves as an important regulator of nutrient homeostasis and a lack of its effects, either due to beta cell failure or resistance in peripheral tissues, or both, results in diabetes mellitus, which affects more than 537 million people worldwide (1). 90% of all diabetes cases are type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), which is characterized by impaired insulin secretion, insulin resistance, and obesity (2).
