Entering the 2025 season, Michael Toglia seemed primed to finally solve the riddle of first base for the Colorado Rockies. Since 2014, the first season following the retirement of Hall of Famer Todd Helton, 41 different players have logged innings at first base. By contrast, the team used 57 first basemen in their first 20 years of existence.

Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images It was yet another night of too little and too late as the Colorado Rockies (9-48) couldn't muster much offense against the New York Mets (35-22) behind Kyle Freeland, losing the first game of the series 4-2. Another quality start for Freeland It was another familiar story for Freeland as he falls to 0-8 on the season with a 5.72 ERA. The Colorado Rockies (9-47) have played some more competitive games as of late, but it hasn’t exactly translated into wins, as they have lost 21 consecutive series dating back to 2024. Following a much-needed off day on Thursday, the Rockies now head to Queens to face off against the New York Mets (34-22). Kyle Freeland (0-7, 5.86 ERA) will take the mound after facing the other New York team last weekend at Coors Field.

The pesky thing about baseball is that to win games, you have to score more runs than the opposing team. An inability to score runs has made this fact abundantly clear for the historically bad Colorado Rockies in 2025. Sitting with both the worst record in baseball and worst run differential, the Rockies' offense, which once struck fear into the hearts of opposing pitchers, is now about as threatening as my two-year-old nephew with a foam bat holding it upside down.
