PROVIDENCE – Last week, more than 150 Bally’s Twin River Lincoln employees rallied to show lawmakers that they’re not giving up in their fight for a fair and smoke-free work environment. Members of the Rhode Island chapter of Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects said their request to local legislators is simple: they want a 100 percent smoke-free work place, just like everyone else in the state.

LINCOLN – The staff and students at Lincoln Central Elementary School are dog people. In two weeks, students raised more than $10,000 for Cumberland’s Hotel for Homeless Dogs, an animal care facility and adoption center located on Martin Street. Teachers Alesandra Pina and Erin Prochet said Central tries to do at least two community service projects per year.

LINCOLN – A liquor license violation and an ignored stop-work order from the town has led to the temporary closure of El Oasis on Higginson Avenue. At the beginning of the year, El Oasis replaced Weiner Genie at 80 Higginson Ave. Prior to opening the restaurant, Diego Contreras, owner of El Oasis, renovated the space, but Building Official Russell Hervieux indicated that Contreras did not pull the proper permits for the renovations.

NORTH PROVIDENCE – A partnership between North Providence High School and the North Providence Police Department has allowed 31 students to participate in hands-on law enforcement education. Last week, law enforcement and school officials gathered to celebrate students who completed their level of tier training through the NPHS Police Academy.
