    Unalaska City School District held its fourth annual Multicultural Day on May 2. Students and community members showcased traditional dances from around the world inside the high school gym. Event Coordinator Russel Laforteza said six performances featured the diverse cultures within the community: Unalaska Mexican Folklorico, the Iluulum Ax̂anangin, Alaska Bayanihan Cultural Dance Coalition, the Samoan Dance Group of Unalaska and Eagles View Elementary (K-4) and the Trench Coat Rats.

    Wind and rain didn’t stop dozens of Unalaskans from participating in “Walking With Our Sisters” on May 5. Passing cars honked in support as marchers carried homemade signs that read “No more stolen sisters,” “Justice for the Missing and Murdered” and “We won’t be quiet” as they walked along Airport Beach Road to City Hall. This marks the second year Unalaskans have organized the march to raise awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

    God's Closet serves as a resource for Unalaskans to find clothing and household items that community members donated. The thrift establishment, currently based at Unalaska Christian Fellowship Church, began in the 1980s at the Jesse Lee Home, a former Methodist orphanage and boarding school.

    The State of Alaska will retry Dustin Ruckman in a fatal 2019 Unalaska car crash, following a hung jury mistrial earlier this year. Superior Court Judge Thomas Matthews scheduled a tentative April 2026 trial date for Ruckman during a status hearing Tuesday, though Matthews said his goal is to have the retrial sooner. Ruckman, now 24, faces felony charges for his involvement in the deaths of Karly McDonald, 16, and Kiara Renteria Haist, 18.

    Classrooms at Unalaska City High School are usually empty on Friday evenings as students and staff headed off for the weekend. But on one winter Friday, things were different. A group of people circled around a table playing cards. They were exchanging Go Fish cards, but it wasn't quite your typical Go Fish game. One player said to another, "chaaskax̂ anuxtakuqing." The other player responded "chaaskax̂ matalakaqing.
