KUCB-FM (Unalaska, AK)
KUCB is a community radio station located in Unalaska, Alaska, broadcasting at a frequency of 89.7 FM. It began operations in October 2008, taking over from KIAL 1450 AM. The station primarily features local programs along with content from National Public Radio, Native Voice One, and Alaska Public Radio. Previously, the KIAL radio and television stations were managed by the city of Unalaska, but due to budget cuts, they transitioned to operate as an independent non-profit organization, relying heavily on support from individual donors. After the transition, KIAL, which had a modest output of 50 watts, shifted to the FM band as KUCB, providing a more powerful signal for its broadcasts.

On a typical Saturday in downtown Unalaska, it’s quiet. It’s easy to hear birds singing and the river’s fresh water flowing into the bay. But on June 14, the island’s usual calm was accompanied by honking cars and voices chanting slogans like “No kings, no crowns, we the people won’t back down.”More than 40 residents gathered at the island's only four-way stop intersection as part of a larger “No Kings” protest that drew massive crowds to cities across the nation over the weekend.

Research published last month in the journal Marine Mammal Science linked fur seal deaths in the Bering Sea to the same toxins that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning. It marks the first documented case of harmful algal blooms leading to a marine mammal die-off in Alaska. Last summer, about ten dead fur seals washed up on a beach on St. Paul Island, a small community in the middle of the Bering Sea.

In its most recent meeting, the North Pacific Fishery Management Council said that funding and scheduling concerns could delay final action on chum bycatch until April 2026. The potential delay has been criticized by those who say that chum salmon crashes across Western Alaska, especially on the Yukon River, require swift action. The Yukon River Drainage Fisheries Association advocates for dozens of communities now in their sixth year of near-total salmon fishing closures.

There are no bears on most of the Aleutians Islands today. But a new study reveals that bears likely lived in Unalaska and Amaknak Island thousands of years ago, solving a decades-long archaeological mystery. In the early 2000s, archeologists found bones from brown bears and polar bear bones at two dig sites: the Margaret Bay Site on Amaknak Island and the Amaknak Bridge Site on Unalaska Island.
