How we did thisThe goal of this study is to better understand how, where and in what context Americans are encountering artificial intelligence as they browse the web. For this analysis, we purchased the March 2025 web browsing data of 900 U.S. adults. Each respondent is a member of KnowledgePanel Digital, an online survey panel whose respondents agree to install an app that tracks their online browsing behavior.

64% of Americans live within 2 miles of a public charging station, and those who live closest to chargers view EVs more positivelyPew Research Center conducted this study to understand Americans’ views on electric vehicles. We surveyed 10,329 U.S. adults from May 30 to June 4, 2023. Everyone who took part in the survey is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses.

The American Trends Panel (ATP), created by Pew Research Center, is a nationally representative panel of randomly selected U.S. adults. Panelists participate via self-administered web surveys. Panelists who do not have internet access at home are provided with a tablet and wireless internet connection. Interviews are conducted in both English and Spanish. The panel is being managed by Ipsos.

The following table details the results of a series of statistical models predicting various measures related to people’s attitudes toward electric vehicles from a set of explanatory variables, or predictors. These models can be interpreted as estimating the effect of proximity to charging infrastructure on these outcomes of interest, while controlling for other factors related to attitudes towards EVs such as urbanicity, political ideology and socioeconomic status.
