For Queen’s Backing Action on the Climate Crisis (QBACC), Queen’s isn’t doing enough to address the climate crisis. Student-run group QBACC is demanding the University take their decarbonization plan one step further and divest from companies degrading the environment. In a divestment report by QBACC Vice-President (Sustainable Investing) Ashley Canete, QBACC asks the University to contribute to a net-zero carbon emission footprint by 2050.

For Sara Gama, ArtSci ’25, paddling and portaging through the rain and pushing through the hard moments is what Camp Outlook is all about. Every summer, Queen’s students volunteer for Camp Outlook, leading outdoor canoe trips for youth in the Kingston area who wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience the outdoors otherwise. Founded by a Queen’s alum 54 years ago, Camp Outlook is funded by a combination of grants and community donations.

Annual St. Patrick’s Day festivities engulfed the University District over the weekend. Students took to the streets on March 16 to celebrate, resulting in $25,400 in fines. Police shut down a nuisance party on Aberdeen St. between 2 and 3 p.m., saying attendees were “mostly respectful and cooperative,” dispersing quicker than in previous years, according to a press release.

Weekly, students head to Collins Bay medium-security institution to teach inmates how to debate. For two years, the Queen’s Debating Union (QDU) has taught debate fundamentals to 15 incarcerated people each week. The two students running the program this year hope it will expand in coming years. Incarcerated people at Collins Bay join students on Mondays with pens and paper, ready to learn from the volunteers.

Budgetary relief might be coming Queen’s way from the Ontario government. On Feb. 6 Ontario Minister of Colleges and Universities Jill Dunlop announced the province is allocating nearly $1.3 billion to post-secondary institutions over the next three years. Ontario won’t lift the tuition freeze for in-province students. The investment includes $903 million to a Post-Secondary Education Sustainability Fund which will be distributed to institutions based on financial need.
