When Moab resident Matthew Fleischman stared down the world’s second-highest mountain this summer, he had one thought in mind: revenge. Fleischman had planned his trip to K2, a gargantuan peak straddling the Pakistan-China border, after he declined to summit Mount Everest during a 2023 “debacle” of a trip. “This trip was kind of payback,” joked Fleischman. Last year, he had reached Everest’s Camp 4 before refusing to climb further, saying he feared for his life amid guide-company mismanagement.
