    Though it may seem hard to believe, there are nearly 70 incoming kindergarteners in Allen Park over the past eight years who read 1,000 books before they entered elementary school. This is all part of a program that encourages kids to register with their local library to read 1,000 books before kindergarten. Since the Allen Park Public Library started the program in 2017, there are 400 kids who have registered for the program, but only about 70 who have completed it.

    In spring 2025, the University of Michigan Club of Downriver awarded scholarships to three graduating seniors who will attend the University of Michigan this fall. Out of the 22 high schools with students who are eligible to apply for these scholarships, two of the student recipients attended Grosse Ile High School. Tommy Cappellino from Grosse Ile High School will attend the Ross School of Business in fall 2025. Cappellino is receiving the organization’s Lloyd Carr Scholarship.

    To celebrate 10 years of the Allen Park Citizen Civic Fund, the organization is hosting “Taste of Allen Park,” an event to celebrate the city. The Allen Park Citizen Civic Fund was started in 2015 after the city emerged from state emergency management. The organization was originally founded to “meet the unmet community challenges,” said Ed Wurtzbacher, the vice president of the board of directors of the Allen Park Citizen Civic Fund.
