My great-grandmother Marion was born in one of the poorest wards in Glasgow in 1872. She was a milliner who was left widowed at a young age with two small children, after her first husband died in the Glasgow Royal Lunatic Asylum at Gartnavel. Five years later she quietly married a retired engineer, 20 years her senior, and together they moved from Scotland to Leeds. It was there my grandmother Violet was born.

Microwave bourbon biscuit fudge This microwave fudge makes the perfect last minute gift. Let the kids help breaking the chocolate and biscuits and stirring them in. MethodLine a 20cm/8in square cake tin with a sheet of baking paper. Tip the condensed milk into a large microwavable bowl. Add the chocolate and microwave on high for 4 minutes, stirring every minute until smooth. Stir in most of the broken biscuits then tip into the tin, levelling off with the back of a spoon.

When we turned out of the driveway of the house we had just sold, the house, spilling with wisteria, in which my husband had proposed and to which we’d brought two babies home, I didn’t look back. Perhaps because I had to do so much moving when I was a kid – schools and houses – I greet goodbyes with a smile and a sort of pragmatic resignation. I don’t look back.

By the time you read this, hopefully our builders will have moved the circus on. It’s not that we don’t like them: we’re devoted to them, in fact. It is because we have been living together for the length of a pregnancy and now our house – the baby in the scenario – is ready to be born again.

• None Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour the gin, lemon juice and elderflower cordial over the ice then shake vigorously for 8-10 seconds. • None Strain the mixture into a collins glass over fresh ice using a hawthorne cocktail strainer and a fine mesh strainer. If you don’t have a strainer, any kitchen sieve will work just as well. • None Top with the soda water and give it a gentle stir to combine everything. Garnish with the lemon slice if using.
