It was a cool May afternoon in 2002. I was 19 and had driven to Westport beach in Washington with a few friends to enjoy a day by the ocean. As a child, I’d been a keen gymnast, always doing backflips and energetic routines. As I got older, I still had a habit of doing cartwheels whenever I found an open space. That day on the beach, on the soft, flat sand, I couldn’t resist. I ended up doing 13 in a row, collapsing into giggles afterwards. My friend ran over to help me up, laughing, too.

When Bear stopped dead in his tracks, his nose turned towards some undergrowth, it was clear something was wrong. It was November last year – Bear’s 12th birthday, and his first proper walk after weeks of taking it easy while he recovered from serious surgery. The South Downs stretched before us. The sun had set and the temperature was dropping. Bear is a retired police dog – a huge, 48kg German shepherd.

This is the story of three women - one an orphan and refugee who finds a place in the studio of a famous French artist, the other a wife and mother who has stood by her husband for nearly forty years. The third is his daughter, caught in the crossfire between her mother and a father she adores. Amelie is first drawn to Henri Matisse as a way of escaping the conventional life expected of her. A free spirit, she sees in this budding young artist a glorious future for them both.

Welcome to The Hyphen! I send out a 'Sunday Scroll’ email like this every other weekend. It’s a round-up of full of things I’m reading, loving, inspired by. For just £1.30 a week (you can read everything behind the paywall!) Over December and the holidays I’ll be slowing down my output — so here’s a BIG thank you so much for your support of The Hyphen this year. I’m very much looking forward to connecting with you more again in 2025! Lots to look forward to.
