Hotel Gotham Newcastle is set to feature a private members’ club when it finally opens its doors in September. Bespoke Hotels first secured planning permission to convert a disused city centre fire station in to a hotel in 2021 and was given the green light to add a further 30 bedrooms last year. The first phase of the hotel will open in the former fire station with 57 bedrooms, including six suites, and a new restaurant and bar.

A proposal to make assaulting a delivery driver a standalone offence has not been taken forward for a vote in the House of Commons. The amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill would offer greater protection to riders for firms such as Deliveroo and UberEats. It builds on plans already set out in the bill to make assaulting a retail worker a standalone offence.

A proposal by Westminster City Council to consult on introducing a late-night levy on venues which sell alcohol would be a “mistake”, UKHospitality has warned. The council, which covers busy London areas including Soho and Piccadilly, is considering hitting late-night bars and restaurants with a tax to fund public safety measures. Other cities such as Liverpool charge a similar tax on businesses licensed to sell alcohol between midnight and 6am.

The Ruby Stella Hotel in London has been sold to a property investment firm for £48m less than a year after it opened. The 153-room Farringdon hotel was put on the market with a guide price of £50m one month after its launch in November 2024. Savills has now sold the hotel to LaSalle Investment Management on behalf of RE Capital, the owners and developers of the building.

Isabela Tavares-Vaz has been named executive head chef at the Doyle Collection’s Kensington hotel in London. The Brazilian-born chef ran her own catering business in São Paulo and worked as head chef at the 120-cover Restaurante 153. After moving to the UK in 2019, she worked as sous chef at the Athenaeum Hotel and Residences amid the UK’s coronavirus lockdowns, cooking for some of the hotel’s long-stay residential guests.
